Opeth - Watershed (2008) Review

My Rating - 5/5

Opeth's best work till date.

This album begins with Coil, a short ballad with beautiful acoustic melodies. In addition to Mikael, this song also features Nathalie Lorichs as the female vocalist which is pleasantly surprising in case of Opeth.

The album then explodes into Heir Apparent, containing some tight rhythm patterns and a brutal guitar solo by Fredrick Akesson. This song is a kick-ass one and definitely among the best songs by the band.

The album continues with The Lotus Eater which has all the elements of a great song. My favorite is the keyboard and guitar part in the middle of the song (If you've heard it, then you know what I am talking about).

The next one, Burden is a song which shows how great Opeth is. With Mikael's one of the best vocal performances, Per's jaw-dropping keyboard solo and 4 consecutive and melodious solos by Mikael and Fredrick before a beautiful harmony, I find it the best ballad ever written!

Porcelain Heart is a very dramatic song which contains an amazing opening guitar riff by Fredrick and some great drumming by Axe. As i said, the song is very dramatic and you can imagine a whole play happening in your mind while listening to it. The music video is also consistent with this feeling.

Keeping the spirit of the album alive, Hessian Peel is a song which reminds me of another classic by Opeth, The Moor (I have no idea why, maybe due to its complications). Nevertheless, it's a great track with some great lyrics :-

"Will their children cry
When their mother dies
And in the autumn of their lives
Will they feel the same"

The only song which I find to be not as convincing as others is Hex Omega. Still, I am not disappointed with this one.

Frankly, I've heard enough negative reviews about this album from Opeth fans. Is it the less growling and more clean vocals present or more progressive rock elements in comparison to other albums? I don't know and I don't give a damn because this is one of the best albums that I've ever enjoyed!

In one sentence: It's a "Once in a lifetime album".
